Turning off auto-restart (XP & Vista)

Tutorial to turn off auto-restart

(Windows XP and Vista)

If you, like me, get severely pissed off because you've left your computer running all night and you wake up in the morning to find it has restarted itself (for your protection! [fuck you, Windows]) because of updates, this is how to turn it off.

Windows XP and Vista Business
Windows Vista Home Basic or Home Premium

Windows XP and Windows Vista Business

1) Start --> Run

2) Type in gpedit.msc (you may have to tell the UAC that yes you are a big girl and it's okay to hurt the bitty computer)

3) Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Windows Update

4) Double click No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations

5) Select "enable" and hit "apply"

Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium

1) Start --> Run

2) Type in regedit (you may have to tell the UAC that yes you are a big girl and it's okay to hurt the bitty computer)

3) Navigate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> Software --> Policies --> Microsoft --> Windows --> WindowsUpdate --> AU

4) Double click NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers

5) Change the value to "1" (no quotes) and hit okay.
