Turning off auto-restart (XP & Vista)

Tutorial to turn off auto-restart

(Windows XP and Vista)

If you, like me, get severely pissed off because you've left your computer running all night and you wake up in the morning to find it has restarted itself (for your protection! [fuck you, Windows]) because of updates, this is how to turn it off.

Windows XP and Vista Business
Windows Vista Home Basic or Home Premium

Windows XP and Windows Vista Business

1) Start --> Run

2) Type in gpedit.msc (you may have to tell the UAC that yes you are a big girl and it's okay to hurt the bitty computer)

3) Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Windows Update

4) Double click No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations

5) Select "enable" and hit "apply"

Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium

1) Start --> Run

2) Type in regedit (you may have to tell the UAC that yes you are a big girl and it's okay to hurt the bitty computer)

3) Navigate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> Software --> Policies --> Microsoft --> Windows --> WindowsUpdate --> AU

4) Double click NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers

5) Change the value to "1" (no quotes) and hit okay.

It looks like Vista Home Basic and Premium don't have it. JFC Microsoft. I'm figuring out how to edit the registry so you can do that instead.

Carrah you're killing me! Check here and see if this exists:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate\DisableWindowsUpdateAccess

If so, set to 0 and restart.

Does you computer even autorestart? If it's not enabled for updates, it seems weird that it would

It does! It did just the other night, and I- well, I should still have it enabled for updates since I haven't messed with any of those settings lately...

I can't find an immediate solution, so when the BL battle is over I'll go do a bit more digging and see if I can figure out where your missing folders are ♥

I just saw this tutorial and I have the same exact problem! I 'll be curious to see what you find out! I have Windows XP! gpedit.msc doesn't exist it says, and the steps for Vista take me up to the same place as 'aroundyou'

okay, check if there is this (no policies folder):

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

And if there is a 'forcedreboot' key, set it to 0

If that doesn't work, try:

Hkey_Local Machine\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Check for the key "WindowsUpdate"

If it isn't there: click back to the "windows" folder, so it is highlighted, then right-click on the right window and go to new --> key. Type "WindowsUpdate" (no quotes). Within WindowsUpdate, use the same method to create "AU" (no quotes). In the AU, right click and go to new --> Dword Value. Name it "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers" (no quotes). Double click and give it a value of 1

If it is there, search for AU (if not there follow above steps), and then add the dword as above

omggggg this is fabulous. I am so tired of my computer doing this. Or my favorite--not shutting down when I tell it to just because I CLOSED the laptop. It stays on all night and I'm like WTF!
