Thread Unfolder
What does it do?
Annoyed by collapsed threads? Me too. It allows you to unfold part or all of the threads on the page.

What do I have to do!
1) Have firefox
2) Install greasemonkey, restart firefox
3) Go here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/5552 and click "install script"
4) Right click the monkey in your status bar (that's greasemonkey) and go to manage scripts.
5) Click the unfolder and go to included pages --> "add"
6) Type in (or c/p) http://*.insanejournal.com*
7) Close, and your favourite comment pages should have "unfold" options on collapsed comments or "unfold all" at the top of the comment page (next to post new comment)

Screencap (note, this is on the same page - not a NEW page like you'd normally be redirected to)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t123/em_m75/screencapforalter.png

NOTE

It will only work on the s1 comment pages (as far as I know!) so I would suggest enabling those in your journal by going to customise journal --> enable custom style = "no" (if you're using an s2 style)

You can also add a bookmark with the following text:
javascript:location.search+=(location.search?'&':'?')+'style=mine'

and click this anytime you're on a customised comment page.

I am going to show my stupidity here, but...what is that?

You know when you have an RP Thread that just goes on and on and on forever but when it gets to a certain number of comments it just 'collapses' where you can see the poster, date and subject line and those linky thingies?

Well this, apparently, will unfold or stretch out those comment threads.

Am assuming by the link name that it's Firefox only? This...would make sense, I'm sure, but I figured it's best to verify!

ARE YOU SURE?

Cause when AIM said it was better, it killed my computer.

Haha cool. They have forums and stuff on the website for questions and the like.

Hahaha, I still have the old aim. But firefox is definitely the top of the line in terms of browsers.

You really should. I can't imagine using another browser as my main one - just for the adblock alone (though I finally found an adblock for IE)

Can I get a screen shot as to what the unfolded thread looks like?

You lost me at the end of that. *clueless*

I installed it and such, but I'm not sure I notice any difference between clicking "thread" or clicking "unfold". *confused and clueless*

Well... when you click 'thread' it takes you to a new page to look at the unfolded comments, where as when you click unfold it does it on the same page.

Oh! Well mine, when I click thread, it's always kept it on the same page, unless I held ctrl when I clicked it. I didn't even realize it would take other people to a new page.

Okay, Em, I'm a dumbass. Because I'm totally not understanding. New page =/= new window. And I totally see what it does now.

My blonde is showing ;D

Oh and the end of that. If you copy and paste the bold and add it as a bookmark, everytime you go to an s2 comment page, you can click the bookmark and it will change the page to look like an s1 comment page (like you have on your own journal)

I sadly haven't been online much AT ALL lately. For awhile it was because of computer problems (which will hopefully be fixed as soon as I visit home again! ♥) but the past week or so I just haven't gotten on. Reading for SCHOOL, ICK. But I'm going to hopefully finish catching up on my reading today so I can get on properly. I didn't get my books on time, so I got behind, hence my scrambling. Yuck.

There are a couple more recent versions of this that work with S2.

This one's my favorite
. However, Sometimes that one doesn't work, in which case I use this one. The second is good for stubborn pages, but you can only unfold ALL comments or one at a time (no unfolding individual threads).

On a sort of related note: Does IJ have a comm similar to lj_nifty? 'Cause I'm beginning to think we really, really need one. ^_^

I like that it works with s2 but not that it only unfolds one comment at a time (I like to see each thread).

I don't think we have one - we should see if squeaky will let us start one (assuming you'd like to and assuming you'd like a co-mod)

Yeah, that's why I use the first one most of the time and keep the second one disabled unless I run into a particularly stubborn layout (does the one you're linking to work on [info]announcements? Cos that one is driving me craaazy!)

I asked over at [info]ideas about starting an ij-nifty asylum earlier today, if we get a yes I'd very much like you to be a mod! I mean, right now your journal often serves as a kind of de facto place-to-get-cool-ij-stuff, so I can't think of anyone ele better suited. Mostly I just wanted a place to put Greasemonkey scripts and the like, you know?

(no - yours does though, so I should really add that up there with my stuff; that's why I tend to s1 everything, especially since I hate comment pages in s2 styles anyway. I wish there was a way to get greasemonkey to recognize the difference)

Thanks! Yeah I agree. I'm thinking greasemonkey, stylish, icon uploaders, and maybe even the migration tutorials - all attractively laid out. Oooh my obsessive organizational side is tingling at the thought XD

Have you thought about just asking Squeaky if he could make us one to maintain? I mean that'd be pretty sweet to have it be all official like.

I thought about it, but I know he's super busy right now what with the site scheme redesign and the GJ exodus still happening. I figured it might be better to put the idea out there first, gauge the amount of interest - basically let it settle into his subconscious before asking straight out. ;-P
